Former president John Mahama has called on Ghanaians to participate in active governance and politics in the country as part of the democratic process.
Delivering a public lecture at Chatham House in the UK on Friday (27 January) on the topic “Africa’s strategic priorities and global role,” Mahama said Ghanaians risk paying dearly if they don’t participate in governance and politics.
“There is a price to pay for aloofness… those who refuse to participate in governance, the price they pay is to be ruled by fools,” Mahama said.
“Today, there are bondholders who said ‘I don’t do politics’,” he said. “I am not NDC, I am not NPP, you see when the debt exchange issues came, today all of them have suddenly jumped up apportioning blame.”
“If you had participated, we probably wouldn’t be where we are. So, everybody must take an interest in how the nation is ran, and so nobody should be apolitical, because when the disaster comes, when the bus crashes, you are in that bus and the chances of you losing your life is high,” Mahama added.
