Leaked audio: Interdiction of COP Mensah and others premature, says Oduro

The interdiction is to make way for disciplinary proceedings into their conduct in line with police service regulations

A retired police officer COP Bright Oduro has said it is premature to interdict the immediate past director general in charge of the technical department of the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah and two others.

The Ghana Police Service on Thursday (7 September) announced the interdiction of COP Mensah, Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi and Superintendent George Lysander Asare in connection with a leaked audio tape, which has become a subject matter of investigation by Parliament.

An ad hoc committee of Parliament is investigating the three officers and the former Northern regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Daniel Bugri Naabu – over the leaked tape that revealed alleged plot to remove the IGP George Akuffo Dampare from office.

“The interdiction is to make way for disciplinary proceedings into their conduct in line with police service regulations,” the police statement said.

Touching on the interdiction on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (7 September), Oduro said he does not see any criminality in what the officers did.

Premature

“In this case, I don’t know if it is the IGP himself who has asked him to proceed on interdiction or the police council. If it is coming from the IGP, then in my opinion I think it is premature,” Oduro said.

“We should have allowed these investigations to continue and then we see the outcome, and then of course if the officers had misconducted themselves somehow, then we would have called for service enquiry into their conduct.

“Where I sit, I don’t see any criminality in what they did, what we can allude to is that probably they misconducted themselves, but even then, it is purely after investigations. So, I would have preferred that we conclude the investigations…,” Oduro added.
