President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned the growing incidents of assaults on teachers across Ghana, describing such acts as criminal and unacceptable.
He singled out the handling of a high-profile case involving students of Kade Senior High School, where a mathematics teacher was assaulted after reportedly preventing candidates from cheating during an examination.
President Mahama made the remarks while addressing delegates at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Delegates Conference, referencing a viral video from October 2025 that captured the attack on the teacher.
The President expressed disappointment that despite the incident being reported to the police, the students involved faced no formal disciplinary or legal consequences after their parents reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement with the victim.
“I saw the video of the Maths teacher being beaten because he refused to allow our students to cheat, and they had a sense of entitlement,” President Mahama said.
“The unfortunate thing is that the matter went to the police station, and they said they settled the matter amicably. How is that? This is assault. It is criminal.”
‘Criminal Act, Not a Private Matter’
President Mahama questioned the precedent set by treating what he described as a clear criminal offence as a private dispute, warning that such resolutions undermine justice and embolden future misconduct.
He criticised the decision to rely solely on financial compensation, noting that it failed to address accountability and deterrence.
“When we inquired, the police also said the teacher was compensated, so he didn’t want to press charges anymore,” he stated. “At least the children should have been booked. They should have been taken through the legal process.”
He added that even if custodial punishment was not considered appropriate, basic legal safeguards should have been applied.
“At the very least, they should have been bonded to be of good behaviour for a period of time, and then we will believe that justice has been done,” he said.
Firm Support for Teachers
President Mahama concluded by assuring teachers of his administration’s full support, pledging decisive action against assaults on education professionals.
“As for assault on teachers, I am with you 100 percent. We will deal with it,” he said.
