President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Alhassan Iddrisu as Acting Government Statistician, pending formal consultations with the Council of State.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Friday, 4 April.

Iddrisu, a seasoned economist with extensive experience in Ghana’s public sector, currently serves as Director of the Economic Strategy and Research Division at the Ministry of Finance. In that role, he oversees macroeconomic forecasting, policy research, and coordination of real and external sector assessments.

He is credited with leading the preparation of Ghana’s Macroeconomic Outlook Report and contributing significantly to the formulation of the National Budget and Economic Policy.

Iddrisu has held several senior roles, including Director of the Economic Research and Forecasting Division (2013–2019) and Acting Director of the Real Sector Division (2010–2013). He has also served on a number of public sector boards and technical committees, playing a key role in shaping economic governance and development strategy.

In addition to his public service, Iddrisu lectures part-time at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, and has previously worked as a consultant for organisations including Oxfam GB and the World Bank.

He holds a PhD in International Development Studies from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo and has advanced degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of Ghana.

The presidency said it is confident in Iddrisu’s capacity to lead Ghana’s statistical services with “excellence and innovation.” His appointment is subject to final approval by the Council of State.
