The Forest Services Division (FSD) of the Forestry Commission has announced a major leadership shake-up, appointing Lydia Opoku as the Acting Executive Director.
She succeeds Hugh C.A. Brown, who has now assumed the role of Acting Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission.
At a brief handover ceremony, Brown formally passed the baton of leadership to Opoku, a respected forester who has served the Division for over three decades. Describing her as a seasoned professional, Brown praised her dedication and achievements, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Division for the past three and a half years.
Opoku brings a rich portfolio of experience to her new role. She has served as regional manager for the former Western Region, now split into the Western and Western North Regions, as well as the Central and Greater Accra Regions. Prior to her appointment, she was the Deputy Director of Operations at the FSD.
Her academic credentials include a Master of Science in Environmental Science and Project Management from Ontario, Canada. She is also well-grounded in Natural Resources Management.
Brown, in his farewell remarks, advised the management team to prioritise operational stability during the transition. “Forgive me if I have stepped on your toes in my line of duty,” he said, adding that he is always available to provide support when needed. “If FSD succeeds, the entire commission succeeds,” he noted.
Valarie Fumey-Nassah, Director of Operations for Plantations, led the management team in commending Brown for his contributions and pledged full support for Opoku in her new role.
In her acceptance remarks, Opoku thanked the acting chief executive for the confidence reposed in her and pledged to work collaboratively with the management team to drive efficiency and deliver on the Division’s mandate.
