Longest marathon hugging a tree: I spent six months rehearsing, says current GWR holder

Abdul Hakim Awal, a 23-year-old journalist from Kumasi, Ghana, who broke the world record for the longest time to hug a tree, says he spent 6 months practicing to achieve the feat.

Abdul Hakim Awal’s “tree-hug-a-thon”, which took place outside Kumasi Cultural Centre, lasted 24 hours, 21 minutes.

Speaking on Asaase’s Artsy on Saturday (19 October), Awal said, “And I spent about six months just rehearsing to hug a tree for 48 hours. So this record means a lot to me.”

Abdul said he took on this challenge to highlight the importance of nature conservation in Ghana.

“So I will not say this is just a tree hug as people see it. It is to create awareness on the invaluable contribution of trees in human life. The need to preserve trees. The importance of tree in human life.”

He made a pledge to plant a new tree for every minute his record attempt lasted, finishing at a total of 1,461.

“But since I did only 24 hours 21 minutes, we ended up at 1461 minutes so we are aiming at planting 1461 new species of trees.”
