Officials ban walking in the Kwahu Mountains

Fears of COVID-19 prompt local assemblies to join forces with health officials in a crackdown on recreation in the mountains

Kwahu West Municipality and Kwahu South District Assembly have banned fitness walks in the Kwahu Mountains.

The move is among public health measures to curtail further spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

To this end, residents have been banned, starting from last weekend, from using the Kwahu Mountain for fitness walks.

“Exercise at home”

For many years, the Kwahu Mountains have been used as a place where people gather to exercise.

The local assemblies have appealed to residents, however, to desist from and urged them rather to exercise in their homes.

They explained that taking fitness walks on the mountain goes against social distancing protocols and could lead to spread of COVID-19.

“You cannot use nose masks during fitness walks and [walkers] are not practising social distancing,” a spokesman for the assembly told Agoo FM.

“We are pleading with them, because exercise could be done at home. You should adhere to the call for your own benefit.

“Since the two [local] chiefs have been informed, arrests will be made from tomorrow going. We don’t want anyone to be arrested so all must comply with this directive.”

Eastern fright

The Eastern Region, home to Kwahu, is one of the areas hardest hit by the new coronavirus disease.

Kwahu West, Suhum and West Akim recently became the latest municipalities in the region to record their first cases of COVID-19.

The region is the fifth hardest hit in Ghana, with fewer cases than only the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western and Central Regions, in that order.

The Eastern Region has so far recorded 106 cases of the coronavirus disease. In 86 of these, the patient has made a successful recovery.

Last week, however, it was reported that 13 health workers in the region had tested positive for the virus.

The Eastern Regional director of the Ghana Health Service, Alberta Bretwum, said 12 patients are doing well but the last one is in critical condition.
