Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister has said there is no reason to warrant the shutdown of Seven Seas Salt Company.
Four persons, a mother and her three children in September perished after drowning in a dyke allegedly created in a lagoon by Seven Seas Salt Mining Company in Laklevikope in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
The family of five who went fishing along the lagoon in the enclave got drowned with the man of the family being the only survivor.
The youth in the area subsequently embarked on a demonstration calling on the government and the minerals regulatory body to halt the activities of Seven Seas Salt Company due to the development.
Giving the state of the region report in Accra on Wednesday (9 November), Yao Letsa said, “…people were expecting me to shut down the company, but I didn’t have any grounds to even recommend that.”
“I went to Minerals Commission and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and they assured us that everything was under their control, and that the accident that happened that resulted in loss of lives was unfortunate,” Letsa said.
