Misappropriation of funds: Former KNUST SRC president, others cleared of wrongdoing

The former SRC president Michael Abuah and ex-speaker of the KNUST parliament, Andrew Anokye Kyeremateng were being investigated following reports that some funds meant for educational and leadership forums in South Africa were misapplied

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has cleared some former executives of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of any breaches in handling funds belonging to the student body.

The former SRC president Michael Abuah and ex-speaker of the KNUST parliament, Andrew Anokye Kyeremateng were being investigated following reports that some funds meant for educational and leadership forums in South Africa were misapplied.

A letter written to the two top appointees by the director of student affairs at the time indicated that the former officers failed to embark on the trip.

They were subsequently asked to refund the GHC9,100 spending money. But the university has found them not guilty of the alleged conduct.

“Based on the investigations conducted and evidence elicited, the committee concludes you did not misappropriate the funds for your travel,” a letter addressed to Abuah and sighted by Asaase News read.

“The vice-chancellor, as the chief disciplinary officer of the university, has considered the committee’s report and accepted the recommendations of the committee for your exoneration,” the letter added.

Abuah said in an interview with Asaase News that he is yet to recover from the event.

“It’s been months of trauma,” Abuah told Asaase News, adding: “At a point, I had to be counselled most of the time. But as a leader, I don’t see any wrong when your people ask for accountability and probity. It is not a bad thing though.”

The university also acquitted the vice president, Reginald Amo Yeboah and financial secretary, Derek Dadzie, after the probe.
