Meet Gemma Griffiths, the Zimbabwean making waves in music

Speaking on Asaase Radio's Accra-Lagos-Joburg show on Saturday, the singer said: "It took a while for the rest of the world to adopt to African style of music, and it is their loss"

Zimbabwean singer Gemma Griffiths from Harare has released her new EP “A Girl from Harare”.

The EP shares her experiences of travelling 24, 000 kilometres across 10 African countries in 500 days.

In an interview with Solomon Ter on Asaase Radio’s Accra-Lagos-Joburg on Saturday (9 April), the singer said: “It took a while for the rest of the world to adopt to African style of music, and it is heir loss. Presently, I’m representing my roots and the kind of music I grew up listening to.”

“I started playing the piano when I was six years old so Zimbabwean music is so woven into who I am,” she said.

A Girl From Harare is Griffiths’s second release from her two-part musical journey, which saw the singer write and record music while travelling across 10 African countries.

Through delicate rhythms coupled with introspective lyrics, the ‘Titungamire hitmaker shares with her fans her journey across the bustling streets and fluorescent night lights of Dar es Salaam, while paying homage to a place in Kenya where she felt the most at home.
