Blinken arrives in Ethiopia as part of bid to boost US engagement in Africa

Blinken's trip to Africa's second most populous nation comes as part of a push by President Joe Biden's administration to step up engagement with Africa, where China and Russia have been stepping up influence

The United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken is set to visit Africa again on 14th and 17th March.

This time around he’s visiting Ethiopia on a bid to support the peace process after a brutal two-year civil war, and renew ties with a longtime ally.

Blinken‘s trip to Africa’s second most populous nation comes as part of a push by President Joe Biden’s administration to step up engagement with Africa, where China and Russia have been stepping up influence.

In Ethiopia, this is to discuss the implementation of a landmark peace deal, which halted the country’s civil war.

The Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of African Affairs at the State Department, expressed their excitement.

She said that they’re excited about this partnership that they successfully highlighted in December, when President Biden and his cabinet hosted the US-Africa Leaders Summit.

She called 2023, the year of travel of US officials to Africa. She also said the United States played a critical role in facilitating the engagement last fall. This is in 2022, by Kenya, South Africa and the African Union to help the parties reach an end to the fighting.
