Kwaku Nhyira Addo writes: The curious timing of Thomas Partey’s rape charges

But even as the news reverberates across Ghana and beyond, Partey and his bride-to-be, Janine, are pushing forward

Wedding bells in Spain as UK prosecutors drop bombshell charges

Thomas Partey’s wedding weekend on Spain’s sunny Costa del Sol has been shaken by a storm few saw coming. On the eve of his big day, the former Arsenal and Black Stars midfielder has been charged in the UK with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

Yet, amid the controversy, Partey and his bride-to-be, Janine, are determined to press on. Their wedding celebrations begin this evening, and sources close to the couple insist “they won’t let this overshadow their joy.”

Past relationships and new allegations

The two women accusing Partey of rape are not strangers. Both had known relationships with him in the past. One was even his wife before his relationship with Janine, who is now the mother of his only child.

British prosecutors allege the incidents occurred between 2021 and 2022 while Partey was still starring for Arsenal. The player is expected to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5.

In a statement widely quoted by British media, Partey’s lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, said her client “denies all charges and sees this as an opportunity to clear his name once and for all.”

No prior charges since 2022 investigations

Until this latest development, Partey had not been on bail nor charged with any offence since investigations began in 2022. His legal team insists he has fully cooperated throughout and has nothing to hide.

Fans divided over timing of charges

Back in Ghana, the timing of the charges has sparked heated debate. Why now? And why just as Partey prepares to tie the knot? Some fans see a calculated move to tarnish his image at a vulnerable moment, while others insist justice must take precedence over public sentiment.

Partey joined Arsenal in 2020 for £45 million, becoming a key figure in their midfield before injuries and off-field issues disrupted his career. His contract expired at the end of June, leaving him a free agent.

A wedding amid uncertainty

For now, the celebrations in Spain go on. But with an August court date looming and global attention fixed on his case, the next chapter of Thomas Partey’s life may be defined as much by the courtroom as by the football pitch.
