The executive director for the Institute for Energy Policies and Research, Kwadwo Poku is calling on Ghana Gas Company Ltd to reduce the price of LPG sold to marketers of the commodity, to ease the burden on Ghanaian consumers.
He said Ghana Gas obtains natural gas from the Jubilee oil fields for free and therefore it is inappropriate to sell at exorbitant prices.
Speaking with Emmanuel Aboagye-Wiafe on Energy 101 on Asaase Radio, Poku said since LPG is only a by-product and 95% of it is sold to generate electricity, he expects the commodity from Ghana Gas to be very affordable to domestic users.
“As part of the agreement with the Jubilee partners; they give us a certain amount of gas for free; the natural gas coming from the jubilee field is free and that goes to GNPC.
“GNPC now gives it on to Ghana gas. What we should understand is that natural gas is made up of over 90% methane, and this is what is mostly used for the powering of the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) for them to generate electricity. But then, less than 5% is the butane and the propane is a composite to be the LPG.”
“…Now, what some of us have noticed is that the mainstream revenue is the methane that they’re supposed to send to the IPPs. The methane; which is the LPG, they now sell to a company called Quantum. Now the agreement I’m told…they now sell that to the Ghanaian populace. LPG coming out of Atuabo Gas from the Quantum terminal is so high priced that companies are not prepared to go and buy that,” he said.
