Update: Teenage mother returns to write BECE after giving birth at Asenua exam centre
The teenager delivered a baby boy shortly after, before being transferred to Victory Hospital in the district for further medical attention. Both mother and baby are said to be in stable condition

The teenage girl in the Ashanti Region has resumed her Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) just a day after giving birth at her examination centre.
She had been absent from school in recent weeks due to pregnancy, went into labour during the ICT paper on Monday at the Asenua Presby School in the Kwabre East Municipality. According to school authorities, she had been persuaded by her headteacher to take part in the exams despite her condition.
During the paper, she requested to use the washroom but never returned. A policewoman assigned to the centre raised an alarm, prompting several women from the community to assist in delivering the baby inside one of the offices at the centre.
“The girl requested to visit the washroom, a right afforded to candidates under exam conditions, and was escorted by a police officer assigned to the centre. The officer reportedly became suspicious of her condition and raised an alarm”, an official confirmed to Asaase News.
“The girl was clearly in distress. She was immediately taken to the headmaster’s office where emergency support was summoned”, the officer noted.
The teenager delivered a baby boy shortly after, before being transferred to Victory Hospital in the district for further medical attention. Both mother and baby are said to be in stable condition.
Remarkably, the young mother returned on Thursday morning to continue writing her remaining papers. School officials, citing her status as a minor, declined to allow media access to her.
Headmaster Michael Tege said necessary assistance would be extended to her.
“By the grace of God she returned to school to write today’s exams. We are in touch with her parents and the assurance is that we will provide the necessary support to ensure she writes sits the rest of her papers”, Tege said.
A total of 120,285 candidates are expected to take part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at 432 designated centres in the Ashanti region.
The figure represents 20% of that of the national one, with 59,999 male and 60,286 female candidates. Five candidates drawn from the Kumasi Central Prisons are also sitting this year’s exams.
Led by the Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene all MMDCEs have been touring various exam centers.
