Kumasi: Seven cattle rearers fined GHC1,200 each for stream pollution
The offenders were prosecuted by Environmental Health Officers from the Manhyia North Sub-Metro, who initiated legal action following persistent non-compliance

Seven cattle rearers in Kumasi have been fined for environmental pollution after dumping waste from their cattle operations into a stream at Moshie Zongo, despite multiple warnings.
The offenders were prosecuted by Environmental Health Officers from the Manhyia North Sub-Metro, who initiated legal action following persistent non-compliance. The case was heard at Court 1 in Asem, with His Worship Andah Akrofi presiding.
Each of the offenders was fined 100 penalty units (GHC1,200) and cautioned against repeating the offense.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has emphasized the need for public cooperation in maintaining a clean environment, warning that pollution poses a serious threat to public health.
Prison meals
The development follows the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi’s warning to livestock owners: any stray cattle found roaming the streets of Ghana’s second-largest city will be culled and used as food for inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison.
The new directive, which took effect from 1 May forms part of the city’s renewed efforts to clamp down on the persistent menace of wandering livestock.
The Mayor says the situation has spiralled out of control, posing serious risks to public safety, sanitation, and urban order.
“There is another thing I will want you to help me look at,” Mr Boadi told journalists.
“If you have cattle and they stray in the vicinity of KMA, be assured that from May 1, they will be killed and given to Kumasi Central Prison for food—especially along the route from the airport through to Manhyia Palace.”
“I cannot sit, for visitors to Kumasi [to] see faecal matter from cattle all over our main roads,” he added.
Reaction
Some cattle owners are unable to meet the financial demand of proper care and feeding, allowing their animals to roam freely, posing a threat to motorists and passengers.
“I agree with what the mayor said, but I don’t know how they are going to arrest the cattle,” said a cattle owner Al-Asbat Alhassan Sidi in an interview with Channel1 News.
“Otumfuo used to pass on the street, sometimes he would have to stop for the cows to pass before Otumfuo passed. I think they should arrest the cow and send the owners to court,” Amin Mohammed Harun, another cattle owner said.
