Kumasi: Over 70 structures destroyed in Racecourse Market fire

The fire, which was reported around 7am, prompted immediate evacuation as most of the shops were not opened at the time the incident occurred.

At least five fire engines were deployed to the Racecourse market after an inferno tore through metal and wooden structures at the trading hub Monday (18 December).

The fire, which was reported around 7am, prompted immediate evacuation as most of the shops were not opened at the time the incident occurred.

Items worth thousands of cedis have been destroyed by the blaze. The police also arrested two people who attempted to loot some of the affected shops. They have since been placed in custody.

It is the second market fire reported in one week.

Officials of the Ghana National Fire Service are currently at the scene to establish the cause of the blaze.

Ashanti Regional Commander of the GNFS, ACFO 1, Henry Giwah wants fire victims to reach out to their emergency numbers for prompt action.
