Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi says long-delayed market redevelopment projects are gaining fresh momentum, following renewed government attention and imminent funding support.
Phase II of the Kejetia–Central Market Redevelopment Project, which had stalled due to Ghana’s 2023 debt restructuring, resumed in August 2024.
As of mid-2025, work is said to be progressing steadily with roofing, structural installation, and utility systems now underway. When completed, the project will deliver over 6,500 shops, a lorry terminal, cold storage units, fire safety systems, and improved pedestrian and traffic infrastructure.
“Upon completion, Phase II will provide over 6,500 new shops, a modern lorry terminal, cold storage units, categorized trading blocks, fire detection systems, and pedestrian-friendly walkways,” the Mayor said while addressing a maiden address during the first ordinary meeting of the second session of the 9th Assembly at the Prempeh Assembly Hall on Thursday (17 June).
Following active engagements and consultations thus far, central government funding releases are
expected by the end of this month July 2025. This will enable steady progress toward the project’s completion, which is projected for mid-2027″, he added.
Turning to the completed Phase I of the Kejetia Market, the Mayor acknowledged ongoing challenges, including frequent fire outbreaks, congestion, and delays in facility maintenance.
He said he has directed the Ghana National Fire Service to conduct periodic fire safety audits, and has initiated reforms to improve the market’s operational efficiency.
“I’ve also asked the contractor handling Phase II to assess and submit a report on reconstructing the fire-damaged areas of Phase I,” he added.
On the long-abandoned Krofrom Market, the Mayor said it remains a top priority of his administration. He revealed that President John Dramani Mahama visited the project site this week and has instructed that the market be included in the government’s Enhanced Market Programme, headed by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
“Preliminary consultations have been held with His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Local Government Ministry. We’re determined to bring Krofrom back to life,” he said.
Addressing public-private partnerships (PPP), the Mayor affirmed his commitment to seeing all approved projects through without political interference.
“I have no intention of halting or victimizing any contractor,” he said. “My only interest is ensuring quality work delivered on time.”
