Kumasi Mayor Samuel Pyne is rallying support for the full rollout and reinforcement of the Holistic Reinforcement for Sustainable Development (HORESD) project.
Launched in 2022 and funded by the European Union in partnership with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Manra, and the Municipal Chamber of Praia, the project has completed its pilot phase and achieved significant milestones, including improving public services, enhancing community participation, creating sustainable employment opportunities, and implementing environmental management initiatives.
Speaking at the project closure conference held on Monday (24 June) Mayor Sam Pyne emphasized the importance of continued community engagement, adequate funding, and strict enforcement of bylaws to ensure the project’s long-term success.
“Today’s event marks the formal handing over and closure of the pilot program. The EU and other partners are pulling out, leaving it to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. We must be cautious in how we sustain the project. The Assembly is focusing on three key areas: constant engagement with the communities, securing funding, and enforcing bylaws related to the project”, he stated.
Mayor Pyne highlighted the KMA’s commitment to combating climate change by investing in capacity building, training, and waste management regulation.
He urged residents to support the project by paying the necessary fees and complying with new waste management practices. The assembly has already procured eight large trucks and 1,000 dustbins to improve waste collection and management across Kumasi.
The mayor of Praia, speaking at the event, praised the EU for its €2.5 million investment and commended Manra for its dedication to implementing various actions within the project.
He noted the project’s success in achieving its key objectives: environmental education, recycling, and promoting the circular economy.
“Over the past few months, we have witnessed remarkable work that has not only transformed our approach to sustainability but also strengthened the bonds between our communities. This project is a testament to what we can achieve when we engage with a common goal greener, more sustainable future,” he said.
Paqui Momparler, president of Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta (MANRA), reiterated the impact of their organization in achieving the HORESD project’s objectives. She acknowledged the challenges faced during the rollout but expressed confidence that the positive outcomes would have a lasting impact. “Despite significant challenges, the results of our efforts will endure,” Momparler said.
The HORESD project’s completion signifies a pivotal moment for Kumasi as the KMA takes full responsibility for its continuation. Mayor Pyne called on all stakeholders, including the media, to support and promote the project’s success.
“We must all work together to ensure the sustainability of this project and the broader goal of creating a healthier, more sustainable environment for future generations,” he concluded.
