Kumasi jurors strike again over nine-month unpaid allowances

The foreman of the jurors, Albert Ackah, confirmed to Asaase News that the group had formally approached judges in the region to announce their decision to down tools until their outstanding payments are released

Court proceedings at the high court in Kumasi have ground to a halt as jurors embark on a strike over months of unpaid allowances.

The foreman of the jurors, Albert Ackah, confirmed to Asaase News that the group had formally approached judges in the region to announce their decision to down tools until their outstanding payments are released.

The strike is already affecting criminal trials at the High Court, with some cases adjourned indefinitely. Ackah explained that the jurors had exhausted all patience and felt compelled to act.

“We officially visited all the judges we are working with then we told them that since October the allowances have not been coming and all the time, we need to write letters but this time we are telling them that until the allowances are paid, we are not coming to the court”, he said.

“We have a lot of cases…even myself I have about 20 cases”, he said highlighting the effects of their action.

At the High Court 3, the judge on Wednesday (2 July) adjourned the case involving police inspector Ahmed Twumasi who has been accused of murdering his girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah also known as Maadwoa – to 14 July.

State prosecutors reportedly pushed for sanctions for the jurors as their continuous absence was delaying such high-profile cases.

“Well today we were expecting all the jurors”, said Nana Addo Barima, a family spokesperson.
“But we remain committed that justice will be served. We pray that the jurors return to work so that this case will settle”.

Ackah however laughed off the possibility of sanctions from the Judicial Service, noting that if authorities chose to penalise them, the consequences would be far-reaching.

He therefore called on Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie to intervene.
