A 20-year-old driver, Abdul Wahab Mohammed, also known as Kwabena Santoma, was slapped with a 20-year prison sentence from a circuit court at Old Tafo in Kumasi, on Monday (3 June) for robbery.

Mohammed was found guilty of robbing a tricycle rider of his mobile phone, valued at GH₵4000.00, and cash amounting to GHC340. State Prosecutor Inspector S K Oppong told the court that the complainant (name withheld) is a tricycle rider and resident of Pankrono Estate while the convict is a driver at Alabar in Kumasi.

According to the prosecution on Saturday (1 June) at about 12:30am Mohammed and his accomplice named only as Faruk attacked the victim who was on his way home from work.

The prosecution said the convict pulled a pistol from his trousers and pointed it at the complainant robbing him of his iPhone 12 valued at valued at GHC4000.00 and cash amounting to GHC340.00.

The complainant raised an alarm leading to his arrest while his accomplice bolted. Mohammed was later sent to the Tafo Pankrono Police Station after the cash was retrieved from him. He admitted to the offence in his caution statement which was taken in the presence of an independent witness.

The court also heard that an informant lured the accomplice who later abandoned the mobile device at Ashtown, a suburb of Kumasi. It was later brought to the Tafo Pankrono Police Station where the victim confirmed its identification.

Mohammed was later charged and arraigned. Police sources confirm that his accomplice was later lynched by an angry mob in another robbery incident.
