Ghana’s Police Service has passed out 545 newly trained officers in Kumasi as part of efforts to support the government’s ambitious 24-Hour Economy policy.
The recruits, comprising 298 females and 247 males—graduated from the Kumasi Police Training School on Friday (4 July), in a ceremony that underscored the security service’s preparedness to facilitate round-the-clock economic activity across the country.
As part of institutional reforms aligned with the new policy, the Police Administration has also established a dedicated 24-Hour Economy Security Secretariat at its national headquarters to coordinate security operations under the initiative.
Key partner
Addressing the passing-out parade, the Director-General of Services at the Ghana Police Service, COP Dr. Ernest Kwabena Owusu, said the Police Service remains a key partner in ensuring the success of the policy.
“For such a monumental policy to succeed, the police have a cardinal role to play in providing the needed security for citizens and workers,” COP Owusu noted.
He urged the new officers to serve with integrity, fairness, and professionalism.
“Do not molest the people you have sworn to protect,” he warned. “Uphold the law with respect for human rights and earn the public’s trust.”
Training
The recruits received training in criminal law, investigations, human rights, riot management, community policing, ICT, and languages, including French. They were also taught social psychology and criminology—essential knowledge for maintaining peace and public order in a changing socio-economic landscape.
The 24-Hour Economy policy, one of the Mahama administration’s flagship programmes, aims to extend business and public services into non-traditional hours to drive productivity, job creation, and economic inclusion.
The Police Service says it will continue to build capacity and develop strategic support systems to meet the evolving demands of a 24-hour economy.
