Kudus welcomes World Cup showdown with England

Mohammed Kudus/World Cup/England

By: Onasis Kizito Danso

Ghanaian forward Mohammed Kudus has welcomed the opportunity to play against England at the World Cup and says the match will be “exciting”, while maintaining that Ghana qualifying for the World Cup is already a “big statement”.

The Tottenham Hotspurs attacker, reflecting on the potential group-stage fixture, acknowledged the quality of the English team but expressed confidence that the Black Stars would be ready for the challenge.

“Just to qualify for the World Cup already is a big statement from us,” Kudus said. “And it’s good that we play against England in the group. It will be an exciting match. I’m looking forward to it.”

Kudus emphasised that the Ghanaian team is not intimidated by the game’s high-profile nature. “We will be prepared for it because we are fully aware of the English team and their quality.”

The potential clash holds significant emotional and cultural weight, given the large Ghanaian diaspora in the UK and the competitive history between the two nations’ football programmes.

Given the sizeable Ghanaian diaspora in the UK, the post-colonial relationship, and the connected histories of the two countries’ football programs, a football match between Ghana and England carries a great deal of emotional and cultural significance.
