In a disheartening turn of events, the Kpeve Headworks of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has suffered a second pump failure within the first month of the year.
Barely five working days after repair works were completed, the pumps have broken down again, leaving thousands of residents scrambling for water.
The latest setback occurred on Friday (10 January), according to the GWCL’s regional supply manager, Ransford Nii Gyan Amoo.
Engineers have been deployed to the site to address the mechanical fault, but the situation has already heightened fears of a prolonged water crisis in Ho and surrounding communities.
For some residents, the news adds insult to injury. Several areas had not received water supply since the initial repairs, and this fresh breakdown threatens to deepen their plight.
This marks the second major failure of the pumps at Kpeve in less than a month, prompting growing frustration and anxiety among residents.
Many are now calling on the government and GWCL management to prioritise funding for the procurement of new, durable pumps to prevent further disruptions.
The GWCL has acknowledged the situation in a press statement issued on Saturday (11 January).
The company confirmed the failure of a pump shaft at the Kpeve intake, warning that water supply to key areas, including Peki, Have, Bame, Akrofu, Ziave, Klefe, and the entire Ho township, would be affected.
“Ghana Water Limited regrets to inform the public about a defective pump shaft at Kpeve intake of the headworks,” the statement read.
“Our emergency response team is working tirelessly to repair the fault and restore supply as soon as possible. GWL apologises for the inconvenience caused and appreciates your understanding.”
The recurring failures at Kpeve highlight a critical need for investment in water infrastructure to secure reliable supply for the Volta Region.
Until then, residents must brace themselves for yet another difficult stretch without running water.
