Kpandai by-election: you won’t be ignored – NPP assures Nyindam

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared its full support for Matthew Nyindam, the party’s Member of Parliament for Kpandai, following a Tamale High Court ruling that nullified his 2024 election victory and ordered a rerun.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday (9 December), Henry Nana Boakye, NPP National Organiser, described the judgment as a “constitutional abomination” and a “monument to judicial recklessness,” saying it threatens the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system.

Nyindam, who won the Kpandai seat by a margin of 3,734 votes, will challenge the ruling in the Court of Appeal and has also filed a certiorari application at the Supreme Court. The NPP said a stay of execution has been filed to halt the rerun.

“The New Patriotic Party stands as one solid rock behind our Member of Parliament for Kpandai, the Honorable Matthew Nyindam. His fight is our fight. His cause is the cause of every member and supporter of this great party,” Boakye said.

Allegations

The party alleges the judgment rewards violence, pointing to the disruption at the collation centre by supporters of the petitioner, which prompted its relocation.

“There is an ancient, sacred legal principle: an evildoer must never benefit from his evil. This judgment violates that principle utterly,” Boakye said.

The NPP argued that the court ignored key statutory provisions, including Regulation 48(2) of C.I. 127, which stipulates that the non-attendance of candidates or agents does not invalidate acts lawfully performed by the returning officer.

Appeal

Boakye called on the appellate courts to set aside the ruling, restore Nyindam’s mandate, and uphold the voters’ expressed choice.

He also criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what the NPP describes as a pattern of using state institutions to undermine opposition.

“The people of Kpandai voted freely. Their vote is sacred. A flawed judgment cannot silence it,” he said, pledging that the party will use all lawful avenues to protect Nyindam’s victory and the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
