Sports analyst Kojo Addae-Mensah has praised Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare for a commanding performance in Ghana’s goalless draw against England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing him as the standout performer and his clear man of the match.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Addae-Mensah said Asare’s display under intense pressure was crucial in securing Ghana a valuable point against the England national football team, insisting the goalkeeper rose above expectations in a high-stakes encounter.
He highlighted Asare’s composure, shot-stopping ability, and authority in goal, noting that while the Black Stars’ defence provided structure, the goalkeeper was still called upon at key moments to deny England.
Addae-Mensah openly admitted he had been 90 per cent in favour of Ati-Zigi in Ghana’s goalkeeping debate before the match, but was ultimately proven wrong by Asare’s performance.
According to him, Asare’s mental strength stood out just as much as his technical performance, especially in a match environment that demanded concentration and resilience throughout.
Addae-Mensah described Asare as his clear man of the match, stressing that the goalkeeper’s interventions were decisive in ensuring Ghana walked away with a clean sheet against one of the tournament favourites.
He added that while the Black Stars defended well as a unit, Asare’s leadership from the back and his command of the penalty area gave the team confidence in dealing with sustained pressure.
He also referenced pre-match doubts about Asare’s ability to handle a high-profile World Cup fixture, saying the goalkeeper had responded emphatically with a performance that silenced critics.
“Some people were skeptical about whether he could hold his own in such a big game, but he has proven it,” he said, adding that the display strengthens belief in Ghana’s goalkeeping depth.
Addae-Mensah added that Asare’s performance could prove pivotal in Ghana’s World Cup campaign, with his heroics against England reinforcing confidence within the squad and among supporters.
