Kofi Asare: Decision to make Ghanaian languages optional in basic schools unnecessary

Some educationists have expressed disappointment at a policy that will make the study and writing of Ghanaian languages at the basic schools’ level optional

Kofi Asare, the executive director of the Africa Education Watch, has described the decision to make the study of Ghanaian languages optional at the basic level as unnecessary.

Some educationists have expressed disappointment over a report suggesting the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) will make the study and writing of Ghanaian languages at the basic schools level optional.

They warn the move by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) could potentially reduce interest in studying the local languages. However, NaCCA has described the report as false.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (26 February), Asare said “Let me first indicate that at first instance, the whole discussion about Ghanaian language being optional wasn’t necessary.”

“So if we are being told about a reversal, from the initial position, it is fine. But it could be said that the first discussion wasn’t necessary at all,” Asare added.
