Kofi Appianin Ennin to contest Obuasi West seat as independent candidate

Ennin said his candidature will address the issue of apathy among his teeming supporters who have vowed not to take part in elections, especially when the grounds are fertile for his victory.

A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairman hopeful for Obuasi West of the Ashanti Region, has announced his bid to contest the upcoming December elections as an independent candidate.

Kofi Appianin Ennin, a known Obuasi-based businessman made his intentions public on the sidelines of an Easter Walk organized by the Appianin-Bonsec Fun Club on Saturday (30 March).

Conceived in May 2022, the NGO has been proactive in tackling pressing issues, including unemployment in Obuasi.

As part of its activities to mark this year’s Easter, hundreds of club members marched through the principal streets of the mining town, showcasing the success stories of the organisation.

Amidst the celebrations, the call for Kofi Appiani Enning, the co-founder of the group, to run as independent parliamentary candidate, gained momentum.

“This is a man who has been supporting the people of Obuasi and the evidence is there for people to see”, said Gifty Opoku, a proud beneficiary.

“This NGO has created jobs for the young people of which I am a beneficiary. It is clear that Mr Enning is not coming to amass wealth. And to enable him to serve the people of Obuasi West better, contesting this year’s election as independent candidate is in order”, she added.

In response to the overwhelming support, Ennin bowed to the pressure and formally accepted the challenge.

He said his candidature will address the issue of apathy among his teeming supporters who have vowed not to take part in elections, especially when the grounds are fertile for his victory.

“The time to rescue my beloved constituents is now. The systems put in place by the NPP and the NDC favours only delegates and not the people. The money they spend on them can be used to develop this constituency and that for me is unfair”, Enning stated.

“So if the people in the constituency are calling me to run independent I have to come and save them and we will work together to make things happen”, he added.

Ennin’s decision to break away from the governing NPP, marks a significant shift in the local political landscape.

It also sets the stage for an intriguing contest in the Obuasi West Constituency, particularly against incumbent MP Kwaku Kwarteng, who is seeking a fourth term in Parliament.
