The management board and provost of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s (KNUST) College of Health Sciences have donated GHC125,000 to the HEAL Komfo Anokye Project.
This project aims to renovate the 70-year-old Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The university plans to deploy specialised skilled professionals from its Faculty of Built Environment to assist with the renovation. Experts in architecture, quantity surveying, engineering, and biomedical sciences from KNUST will be actively involved.
Professor Christian Agyare, provost of Health Sciences, emphasised KATH’s importance to KNUST’s clinical training programmes.
“Since the hospital was converted into a teaching hospital nearly 50 years ago, we have been training our students here. About 95% of our students requiring clinical training are trained here. So, there’s a need for us to contribute. We have also been providing the expertise that is needed. Architects, quantity surveyors, engineers, and biomedical scientists support this project. We are entreating the public to support the project so we can fully utilize this facility.”
The HEAL Komfo Anokye Project, launched by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, aims to raise US$10 million to renovate Blocks A, B, C, and D of the hospital within three years, extended from the original 24 months due to the hospital’s ongoing operations.
Samuel Adu Boakye, Chairman of the HEAL Komfo Anokye Project, appreciated KNUST’s contribution and revealed that US$4 million has been raised in five months.
“One constraint of the HEAL KATH project is that the hospital is still in operation. Generally, what is left is more than what is to be done. Because of this, the 24-month estimations we projected have been moved to 36 months. However, we are committed, especially with the kind of support Ghanaians have exhibited”, he noted.
