Dozens of traders in Kumasi were left stranded on Monday after a private developer demolished shops and stalls in a disputed land reclamation exercise, destroying goods worth thousands of cedis, local officials and eyewitnesses said.
The demolition, which took place before dawn at Krofrom-Columbia in the Ashanti regional capital, razed several trading structures and left many scrambling to salvage their belongings.
“They demolished the shops, destroying our personal belongings and goods,” one affected trader told Asaase News.
Some traders said they received no official notice before the exercise, while others claimed they had been verbally warned two weeks earlier by unidentified individuals who said the land had been sold.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) denied authorising the operation, though its spokesperson confirmed the landowner had secured a permit to develop the site.
“The landowner did not follow due process to evacuate the traders,” said Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, the assembly’s public relations officer. She added that the KMA would intervene to seek compensation for the traders if they formally lodged a complaint.
