Philip Kofi Anning says Kennedy Agyapong stands a strong chance of winning the NPP presidential primaries if the process is conducted without intimidation or manipulation.
Speaking ahead of the 31 January contest, Anning said many party executives who previously concealed their support for Agyapong are now more willing to express it openly.
“In the last election, people felt the establishment had already decided. Now delegates feel freer to support who they believe can win,” he on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (19 January).
He dismissed claims that party ‘old guards’ had abandoned former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia en bloc, noting that support across camps remains fluid.
According to Anning, Agyapong’s core strength lies with polling station executives, whom he described as the true grassroots and the backbone of the party’s electoral college.
“Our campaign is open. We don’t create barriers. We go constituency by constituency, listening and addressing specific problems,” he explained.
While welcoming recent opinion polls that place Agyapong in the lead, Anning cautioned against complacency.
“I don’t rely solely on polls. Delegates can surprise you. Until the ballot is cast and results declared, you keep working,” he said.
He added that the campaign would accept the outcome of the primaries if the process is transparent and credible.
“Ken will not dispute an election that he believes was conducted fairly,” Anning stated.
