Management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has announced significant advancements in dialysis services, with plans to expand and enhance capabilities to better serve patients, including children.
Like many others, the facility has been grappling with the scarcity of dialysis machines. This shortage severely limits the hospital’s capacity to treat many patients, often resulting in referrals to other medical facilities, such as the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in the Greater Accra Region.
However, the CEO of the hospital Prof Otchere Addai Mensah says the hospital which had one-and-a-half dialysis machines previously anticipates an increase to 12 machines by the end of the month.
He made these remarks during a media briefing on Tuesday (14 May).
“I told you we had one-and-half dialysis machines at the time today we have four. The hospital’s IGF has procured three brand-new dialysis machines we are waiting for them. There is a company that is giving us two…We are hoping that by the end of this month, we will get 12 dialysis machines and I believe that we have made progress”, Addai-Mensah remarked.
“One major thing we are looking at is dialysis for children. It appears dialysis for children does not exist, so we are looking at allowing children to live irrespective of the fact that they may have developed end-stage renal figure”, he stated.
He further mentioned that the renovation of the facility, known as the Heal Komfo Anokye project, initiated by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu Il, is still at 40% completion, unchanged from three months ago due to the cedi’s depreciation against the dollar.
The CEO also praised the traditional ruler for providing meals to patients at the facility and other regional hospitals during the Akwasidae celebration, marking the King’s 25th Anniversary as the 16th occupant of the golden stool.
