KAIPTC deputy commandant opens 2025 Gender Adviser’s Course, reaffirms commitment to women, peace and security agenda

The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has officially opened the 2025 Gender Adviser’s Course in Accra, underscoring the critical role of gender equality in promoting lasting peace and security across Africa.

Speaking on behalf of KAIPTC’s Executive Management Committee, Commandant Air Commodore David Anetey Akrong welcomed participants and highlighted the vital responsibilities of gender advisers and focal persons in peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts.

The course is delivered in partnership with Sweden’s Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA).

“Recognising and addressing gender-based inequalities is essential to achieving long-term peace and security,” the Commandant said, noting that despite progress, women and girls still face significant challenges in conflict-affected areas.

He referenced the landmark United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), reaffirming KAIPTC’s commitment to gender mainstreaming in peace operations.

The Centre has made the WPS agenda a central pillar of its 2024–2028 strategic plan, focusing on strengthening African capacities to implement the Maputo Protocol, which protects and promotes women’s rights across the continent.

“In line with this strategic priority, KAIPTC aims to equip peace and security personnel with the necessary skills to effectively carry out their roles. Gender Advisers and Focal Persons must understand the unique nature of their responsibilities,” he added.

At the opening, Emmicki Roos, Senior Women, Peace and Security Specialist and FBA representative, stressed that gender equality involves both men and women, cautioning against focusing solely on women and girls.

“When we talk about gender equality, we must remember it includes men too. It’s a mistake to focus only on women and girls, even though their marginalisation is real and significant,” Roos said.

Originally developed in Sando, Sweden, the Gender Adviser’s Course has been adapted for delivery in Ghana, with this being its fourth iteration at KAIPTC.

The training aims to equip participants with practical tools and knowledge to effectively support gender mainstreaming in their organisations, ensuring the Women, Peace and Security agenda is fully integrated into all operational activities.
