KAIPTC bids farewell to Major Gen Richard Addo Gyane

Appointed as KAIPTC Commandant in November 2022, Major Gen Gyane steered the Centre through a critical period of recovery and transformation following the COVID-19 pandemic

The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) on Tuesday hosted a vibrant ceremony to honor the service and bid farewell to its outgoing Commandant, Major General Richard Addo Gyane, who officially retires after nearly four decades in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The event marked the end of a journey that began in 1985 when Major Gen Addo Gyane joined the Ghana Military Academy as the only Flight Cadet in his cohort.

His transition into the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) Corps would eventually shape a stellar career characterised by resilience, innovation, and dedicated leadership.

Appointed as KAIPTC Commandant in November 2022, Major Gen Gyane steered the Centre through a critical period of recovery and transformation following the COVID-19 pandemic.

His leadership saw the implementation of major reforms and infrastructure upgrades, including the renovation of the Women Youth Peace and Security Institute (WYPSI), construction of a new main gate, and a major expansion of the Centre’s digital learning capabilities.

He also introduced strategic reforms aimed at ensuring the Centre’s long-term financial sustainability. These included the commercialisation of selected training programmes, broadening of academic offerings, and strengthening of partnerships with donor organisations.

Notably, a new Youth Unit was created and integrated into what is now a fully-fledged Women, Peace and Security Institute (WPSI). Plans for the establishment of an Undergraduate School in Peace Studies and the development of a KAIPTC Hotel are currently underway.

In his farewell address, Major Gen Addo Gyane reflected on the highs and lows of his service with gratitude and pride.

“Though I leave the KAIPTC in the flesh, my spirit and prayers shall remain with the Centre that I have come to love so much,” he said, receiving a standing ovation from staff, dignitaries, and military colleagues in attendance.

The ceremony also featured a symbolic handover of leadership to his successor, Air Commodore David Akrong.

In a warm endorsement, Major Gen Addo Gyane described Air Cdre Akrong as a capable and visionary leader. He encouraged him to adopt an inclusive leadership style and tap into the strengths of KAIPTC’s dynamic and diverse team.
