Kafui Dey urges TGMA to hire students as seat fillers to tackle chronic late starts

Ghanaian broadcaster and event host Kafui Dey has suggested that organizers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) employ university students as seat fillers to curb habitual late starts.

Speaking on Showbiz A-Z, Kafui praised recent hosting improvements at the TGMA but stressed that punctuality remains a major issue.

“What doesn’t help the MCs is that TGMA never starts on time,” he said. “Why not employ students from University of Professional Studies, Accra, University of Management and Technology, or University of Ghana as placeholders?”

Kafui referenced global examples, noting that award shows such as the Oscars and Grammys use students to fill empty seats. “If it’s set for 8 p.m. and only half-full, students make it look packed,” he explained, adding that the placeholders step aside once stars arrive.

When asked if he would consider hosting the TGMA, Kafui expressed willingness. “If they call, I’ll do it. I’ve hosted concerts like Panji Anoff’s at Polo Grounds, I love music events and I’m an MC,” he said.

The TGMA has repeatedly faced criticism for starting late, often causing the awards ceremony to run into the following day.

Kafui Dey, a veteran broadcaster, TV and radio presenter, and master of ceremonies, has hosted numerous major entertainment and corporate events across Ghana.
