Joint security forces apologise for military brutality in Walewale

The military high command and the Ghana Police Service Command have apologised for the brutality on civilians in Walewale

The military high command and the Ghana Police Service Command in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region have apologised to the overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sherigah II, for brutalising civilians in Walewale.

The apologies follow a military drill that resulted in assaults on local people, including minors, after a stationary vehicle caught fire in Walewale on Tuesday (14 January 2025).

The overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area sent a delegation to the Duu-rana’s Palace to question the military and police command about the incident.

The meeting ended peacefully with the security forces apologising for assaulting the residents.

“All that we can say is we are sorry for what we did,” the police commander said to the Nayiri, with the military commander also saying the same thing by way of an apology for the brutality.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions in the North East Region, particularly following the recent flaring up of the chieftaincy conflict in Bawku, which has long been plagued by violence and ethnic divisions.

However, the delegation also warned the youth of Mamprugu not to attack security personnel, stressing that such actions would have severe consequences.
