John Dramani Mahama was sworn in today (7 January) as President of the Republic of Ghana at the Independence Square in Accra in a ceremony steeped in tradition and national pride.

Addressing a crowd of dignitaries, citizens, and international observers, President Mahama laid out an ambitious vision for his tenure, emphasising hope, accountability, and decisive action to tackle the challenges facing the nation.

In his inaugural speech, President Mahama said, “I will have the humility and presence of mind to take responsibility for any challenges and be willing to act firmly and timeously to resolve the challenges that we face as a nation,” he declared.

Acknowledging the weight of expectation from the electorate, President Mahama underscored the importance of hope and faith in achieving a national reset. “There is reason for hope and there is every reason for hope. But we must also have faith because faith empowers us to trust the things that will happen,” he said, urging Ghanaians to envision and work toward a better future for the country.

“Actions have always spoken louder than words,” President Mahama remarked, signaling his resolve to deliver measurable outcomes in the early days of his presidency.

In a poignant moment, the President reminded Ghanaians that the nation’s success depends on the collective efforts of its people. “We need a reset with the faith we have in our country and our leadership. We need a reset with the faith we have in our institutions. We need a reset with our faith in our dear nation, Ghana,” he said.

President Mahama’s speech also emphasised the importance of unity, describing Ghana as a collective identity made up of its citizens.

“All of you seated here today, Ghanaian citizens, you are Ghana. The people who you are with or near you as you watch this on television, in your homes, or listen on radio, or follow on social media, are what we call Ghana,” he stated.

In closing, President Mahama urged citizens to envision a Ghana they want to leave behind for future generations.
