John Boadu calls for data-driven action and strategic candidate selection in Election 2028

Jonn Boadu/New Patriotic Party (NPP)/Election 2028

At a New Patriotic Party-UK (NPP UK) branch communications forum late last month, John Boadu, the former general secretary and aspiring national chairman of the NPP, delivered an insightful and data-rich address that urged the party to return to evidence-based strategy, smart candidate selection and grass-roots digitalisation as it prepares for the 2028 elections.

Speaking from decades of experience in party organisation and election management, Boadu offered a sober reflection on lessons from elections past and a roadmap for the next three years, blending analytical precision with practical political wisdom.

Lessons learned

John Boadu began his presentation by revisiting the 2016 general election, identifying key reasons for the NDC’s defeat – including unfavourable economic conditions, a widespread perception of corruption, weak internal organisation and loss of public confidence.

He stressed that these lessons should serve as strategic reminders rather than sources of complacency for the NPP.

“Elections are won with deliberate planning, not nostalgia,” he said. “The factors that made us win in 2016 are not automatically repeatable. The voter landscape has evolved.”

Boadu stressed that research-based messaging must guide the party’s communication, noting that campaign tone should be managed carefully to align with voter priorities.

Focus on constituency party

Highlighting constituency-level organisation as the core of party strength, John Boadu argued that the human resource at that level is often neglected – yet that is where electoral battles are won or lost.

He called for increased investment of time, training and digitalisation in constituency-level party organisation.

Efficient data handling and technology-driven processes could enhance transparency, speed and confidence in the party’s internal and external elections, he said.

In Parliament …

Boadu described parliamentary elections as “the most critical determinant” of the NPP’s national performance.

He shared revealing statistics:

  • The NPP holds 87 seats in Parliament.
  • There are four regions where the party holds no seats – Oti, Upper East, Upper West and Volta.
  • There are five other regions with only one NPP seat each – Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Savannah and Western North.

In other words, the party holds just five across nine regions. Boadu described this as “a strategic red zone” requiring deliberate planning.

Data/demography imperative

He urged the NPP to consider demographic factors, gender balance and electability in selecting candidates.

Each constituency, Boadu said, has its own political DNA, and strategies must be tailored accordingly.

To complement this, he called for targeted messaging – sharp, evidence-based and reflecting the lives and aspirations of local communities.

He also emphasised the need to mobilise the youth by engaging them through social media, not only as commentators but as active defenders and ambassadors of the NPP’s message.

Strategic reflection

The message from John Boadu was clear: the NPP cannot afford business as usual. The road to 2028 requires precision, organisation and unity of purpose.

“We must be intentional about whom we select, how we campaign, and how we speak to the Ghanaian voter,” he concluded.

“Winning elections is science, not luck – and the time to plan is now.”
