Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office confirmed in a statement released on Friday. At 82 years old, Biden is now confronting a serious health challenge just months after retiring from political life.
Medical reports indicate that the cancer is metastatic and hormone-sensitive, with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) — one of the most advanced grades in prostate cancer classification. The cancer has reportedly spread to his bones, raising concerns about its progression and treatment options.
While the diagnosis is serious, Biden’s doctors remain cautiously optimistic. Hormone-deprivation therapy, one of the most effective frontline treatments for this type of cancer, is being considered, and the former president is said to be “reviewing treatment options with his family and healthcare team.”
The diagnosis comes after Biden opted not to seek re-election in 2024, following a turbulent presidency marked by political gridlock and concerns over his stamina. His decision paved the way for then-Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee. However, she was ultimately defeated by Donald Trump, who returned to office in a historic comeback.
Despite leaving office, Biden remained an outspoken figure on public health issues — especially cancer research. He spearheaded the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative after the tragic loss of his son Beau Biden to brain cancer in 2015. That legacy continues as Biden now becomes a public figure personally affected by the very disease he campaigned against.
The White House and the Biden family have requested privacy during this time but have pledged to share updates on the former president’s condition as more becomes known..
