Jerome Opoku makes permanent switch to İstanbul Başakşehir

Ghanaian defender Jerome Opoku has completed a permanent transfer to Süper Lig outfit İstanbul Başakşehir F K after impressing on loan during the 2023/2024 season.

Opoku, 25, arrives from Portuguese Primeira Liga side F C Arouca following a successful loan spell with the Turkish club.

The centre-back played a key role in Başakşehir’s strong finish, making 28 league appearances and contributing to their fourth-place finish in the Süper Lig.

His defensive solidity and attacking threat were evident throughout the campaign, as he chipped in with four goals and an assist.

This strong showing helped secure Boz Baykuşlar a coveted spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League for the upcoming 2024/2025 season.

The Ghanaian international, who has three caps for the Black Stars, has committed his future to the club by signing a three-year deal.

“A three-year contract was signed with our player using the purchase option of Jerome Opoku,” said an official club statement. “Whom we rented from the Portuguese club Arouca at the beginning of the 2023/2024 season.”

Opoku, who was recently named in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, will be hoping to make a significant impact in Istanbul.

The club echoed this sentiment, stating their belief that Opoku will be “a valuable member of the Başakşehir family” for years to come.
