Jean Mensa is still on official duty in Nigeria, says EC

The election management body says its chairperson Jean Mensa is in Nigeria, dispelling rumours that she is running away from meeting Ghanaian MPs

The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted claims suggesting that its chairperson Jean Mensa disrespected Parliament by failing to appear before the House over the proposed constitutional instrument (CI) on the registration of voters.

The Minority in Parliament last Thursday objected to the briefing by a senior official without the EC boss.

The draft CI identifies the Ghana Card as the primary document for voter registration in the lead up to the 2024 elections.

However, a statement issued by the EC on Sunday (26 February) said Mensa was in Nigeria for official duties before the EC received the invitation.

“For the attention of the general public, the EC received a letter from Parliament on Wednesday 22 February 2023 inviting the commission to brief the leadership of the House on the draft CI on the registration of voters on Thursday 23 February 2023,” the EC statement said.

“At that time the chairperson had travelled to Nigeria at the invitation of ECOWAS/ECONEC for a peer exchange and election observation mission. That notwithstanding Dr Bossman Asare, deputy chair for corporate services attended the meeting with other directors of the commission.

“We wish to state that contrary to news item that EC chair has returned to Ghana, the chairperson is still in Nigeria. She has not returned to Ghana,” the statement added.
