The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region is grappling with serious operational challenges, raising concerns over public safety.
A recent visit by Municipal Chief Executive Parke-Davis Magyigbe revealed the extent of the crisis.
Group Officer 1 Vincentia Morrison detailed the troubling conditions, highlighting that the municipality’s only fire tender has been broken down for years and stripped of parts to fix other vehicles elsewhere, leaving Jasikan without a functioning firefighting truck.
The situation is compounded by the presence of just two fire hydrants in the municipality, one of which is faulty.
The GNFS office, built decades ago, has seen no renovation, suffers from poor furnishing, and lacks essential equipment. Staff shortages and inadequate accommodation further hinder effective fire safety operations.
According to the officers, the challenges severely undermine their ability to respond to emergencies, and they are appealing for urgent intervention.
The Municipal Chief Executive has requested an immediate comprehensive report on the fire tender and pledged to prioritise the acquisition of a new fire truck and the construction of a modern office. “We will do everything within our power to address these urgent needs,” he assured.
Residents and stakeholders have also called for swift action to prevent potential disasters, stressing that a fully functional fire service is critical to safeguarding lives and property.
