Japan PM calls snap election for 8 February to seek stronger mandate

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Monday she will dissolve parliament this week and call a snap general election on 8 February, seeking a stronger mandate to push through her policy agenda.

Speaking at a news conference, Takaichi said the decision would allow voters to judge whether she is fit to lead the country.

She confirmed that the lower house will be dissolved on 23 January, with campaigning set to begin on 27 January ahead of voting and ballot counting on 8 February.

Takaichi, Japan’s first woman prime minister, was appointed in October and has enjoyed strong personal approval ratings despite declining support for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

The LDP and its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, currently hold only a slim majority in the powerful lower house, a situation analysts say could hinder the passage of key policies.

Her agenda includes increased fiscal spending, a boost to defence funding, and swift parliamentary approval of a record 122.3-trillion-yen ($768 billion) budget for the fiscal year beginning in April 2026, aimed at tackling inflation and supporting the world’s fourth-largest economy.

Opposition parties criticised the snap election, warning it could delay passage of the budget. Jun Azumi of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan said the move risked “sacrificing livelihoods” at a time of economic pressure.

Analysts also say the election could strengthen Takaichi’s hand in foreign policy, particularly amid rising tensions with China over Taiwan and recent trade restrictions imposed by Beijing.

However, some experts warn that a decisive win could prompt China to intensify pressure on Japan through economic measures.

The LDP has dominated Japanese politics for decades but has faced growing challenges in recent elections, with smaller and populist parties gaining ground and voter concern rising over inflation and regional security.
