Jantuah backs call for urgent probe into ECG container loss

Jantuah believes this discrepancy signals deeper systemic issues related to port management and financial governance within the country

Kwame Jantuah, a prominent lawyer and senior member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has called on the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the financial delays that have hampered the clearance of shipments by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio on Saturday, 5 April, Jantuah weighed in on the missing ECG containers scandal, expressing doubts over whether the proper port clearance procedures were followed. He highlighted potential lapses in the system and called for further scrutiny of the process.

He pointed out that while there are clear processes and checks at the port to monitor the exit of goods, reports suggest some containers that were meant to be stored at the port have been seen in various parts of Accra, including Ashaiman.

Jantuah believes this discrepancy signals deeper systemic issues related to port management and financial governance within the country.

“My challenge is that before you take anything out of the port, there are processes and there are procedures and even there are checks at the gates,” Jantuah said. “If it so happens that some of these containers are out as we have been told—some seen in other parts of Accra—then it means they did leave. And how did they leave?”

The former ECG boss, Samuel Dubik Mahama, had earlier stated that the containers remained at the port, attributing delays to financial constraints and staggered deliveries. Jantuah, however, questioned Mahama’s narrative, emphasizing that if the containers were indeed missing, the breakdown in procedure needed further scrutiny.

“The other side of the coin is when you hear Samuel Dubik Mahama say the containers are in the port, and that he doesn’t see how they could have left. So, if they are indeed missing, then where’s the breakdown?” Jantuah asked.

Jantuah also raised the issue of ECG’s debts to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), which he believes may have contributed to the delays in clearing the containers. The lawyer suggested that the Ministry of Finance should have been aware of the financial difficulties faced by ECG and questioned whether any action was taken to resolve the issue.

“You can see that there was an issue of finance for ECG in clearing those containers,” Jantuah said. “If that was the case, was government aware at the time that this was the problem? And if government was aware, in terms of the Ministry of Finance, what was done about it?”

He ended by urging for transparency and a full-scale investigation, stressing that the government must act decisively to safeguard public funds and prevent future mishandling of public procurement processes.

“They are going to have some hearing—let’s wait and see what comes out of the hearing,” Jantuah stated.
