Janet Nabla, a presidential candidate for People’s National Party (PNP) Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, has vowed to take legal action against the Electoral Commission (EC), accusing the body of unjustly barring her from the race.
Nabla, who was one of 11 aspirants disqualified after a review of nomination forms, claims the commission’s decision represents a wider injustice not only to her but to the people of Ghana.
The EC announced the disqualifications on Friday (20 September), citing the candidates’ failure to meet the requirements despite being given opportunities to correct errors in their submissions.
In an exclusive interview with Asaase Radio, Nabla, a former member of the People’s National Convention (PNC), said her disqualification was intentional.
The PNC will also be absent from a presidential contest for the first time since the establishment of Ghana’s Fourth Republic in 1996.
“I rectified every error even on my own and gave it to the EC and it is [Samuel] Kwaah [deputy director of Electoral Services] who received it, so I know Mr. Kwaah, who doesn’t like me, he [is] keeping the thing from the EC,” she said.
Nabla presented a letter dated Saturday (14 September) as evidence that she responded promptly to the EC’s request for corrections.
She also revealed that she only received official notice of her disqualification 45 minutes before the EC held the ballot on Friday (20 September).
Outraged by what she views as a manipulation of the process, Nabla declared her intention to challenge the commission in court:
“We are going to court; no 13 people are going anywhere to go and contest. EC has no power to elect the people they want to contest for this year. There were not there to tell Ghanaians what to do; they were there to just do their work and they have failed woefully to do that work.”
