The National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives at Jacobu in the Odotobri Constituency of the Ashanti Region have accused the government of neglect and political bias after their community was excluded from the 24-hour market project spearheaded by Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Local NDC leaders say the project — part of a wider initiative to promote round-the-clock economic activity — was initially expected to be built in Jacobu but has now been relocated to Mile 9, another community.
“The location chosen will not bring any economic importance to the district. We strongly believe such an edifice should be placed where people will truly benefit from it,” said Andrews Korankye, the NDC Communications Officer for the Odotobri Constituency.
“Now the priority of the DCE is not about revenue generation, but about who convinces who,” he fumed.
The executives highlighted deteriorating infrastructure in Jacobu, including a collapsed bridge, poor road networks, and a lack of social amenities, saying the situation has made life unbearable for residents.
Transport fares have surged as drivers struggle with the bad roads, worsening economic hardship.
Residents have also threatened to stage a demonstration if authorities fail to fix the roads and address the community’s grievances.
“We cannot sit down for the government to build a market where revenue generation would be a problem,” one resident said, expressing frustration over what they describe as “unequal development” in the district.
