IWD 2025: Aya Institute advocates for more female voices in decision-making

The institute also pointed out that political appointments remain largely male-dominated. It urged the government to actively appoint more women to key positions in governance, policy, and public administration.

The Aya Institute for Women, Politics, and Media has made a strong call for increased female representation in decision-making spaces, including politics and the media as Ghana joins the world in celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025.

In a statement on Friday (8 March), the institute highlighted key achievements, including Ghana’s election of its first female vice president and the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill in 2024. However, it stressed that more work is needed to achieve full gender equality.

The institute highlighted the World Economic Forum’s 2024 Global Gender Gap report, which warns that at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158—five generations from now—to achieve full gender parity.

It stressed that this timeline is unacceptable and called for immediate action.

“A democracy is only truly functional when it represents all its people. Women’s voices must not only be heard but must be central to decision-making at all levels,” the Aya Institute stated.

“We must see gender equality as a national priority. The presence of more women in leadership is not just about fairness—it is about ensuring diverse perspectives that drive economic and social progress,” the statement read.

The institute also pointed out that political appointments remain largely male-dominated. It urged the government to actively appoint more women to key positions in governance, policy, and public administration.
