Former Minister for Special Development Initiatives, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has welcomed the Interior Minister’s findings into the Kasoa election-related shooting, saying the report vindicates her from long-standing accusations of instigating violence during the 2020 polls.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Koomson said the Interior Minister’s report, which identified 21 suspects and cited security lapses and disciplinary breaches among officers, confirmed that the Kasoa incident “was the result of systemic failures, not the actions or instigation of any individual.”
“For years, I endured harsh and unfair public attacks. I was branded violent and reckless through sensational and misleading headlines,” she said.
“Today, the Interior Minister’s findings have vindicated me.”
Koomson, a former MP for Awutu Senya East, also recalled her personal ordeal during the rerun of polling stations in Ablekuma North, where she was assaulted while observing the process.
“That experience remains one of the darkest moments of my public life, a reminder of how false narratives can destroy reputations and endanger lives,” she stated.
While expressing sympathy to victims of electoral violence, Koomson backed the Interior Minister’s recommendations for reforms — including compensation for victims, enhanced police training, and the discontinuation of military involvement in election crowd control operations.
She urged political actors and the media to avoid misinformation and incitement, stressing that the moment “calls not for blame, but for introspection, justice, and national unity.”
“Let us all pledge that never again should political competition lead to the loss of Ghanaian lives,” Koomson said.
