It was difficult switching from rap to singing- Kofi Kinaata

Ghanaian Highlife sensation Martin Kofi King Arthur, popularly known as Kofi Kinaata, has shed light on his artistic evolution from rapping to singing.

In an exclusive interview with Akosua Tilly on Asaase Café in Cape Coast, Kinaata revealed that the shift was not a calculated move but a natural progression in his music career.

“I knew I could sing when I started, but my fans were really into my rapping because that’s what they fell in love with, until I decided to switch things up,” the It Is Finished hitmaker said.

Kinaata, who first gained national attention for his witty rap lines, explained that while rapping brought him recognition, singing allowed him to expand his artistry and connect more deeply with audiences.

To illustrate the journey, he used a vivid analogy: likening himself to a driver responsible for safely transporting passengers (his fans). While passengers may question the route or suggest alternatives, the driver’s ultimate goal is to navigate traffic and ensure a smooth arrival.

“In the same way, I knew my fans might resist at first, but once they saw where I was taking them, they enjoyed the ride,” he said.

Today, his melodic performances have been widely embraced, broadening his reach and reinforcing his place as one of Ghana’s most versatile artists. For Kinaata, the transition underscores the importance of growth and adaptability in sustaining a lasting music career.
