Ghanaian dancehall artist Samini has said that doing organic reggae as an artist in Ghana and being successful in that genre is impossible.
Reggae is a popular music that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s and quickly emerged as the country’s dominant music.
“If I did reggae organic, I wouldn’t have made it in the industry,” the ‘Linda’ hitmaker told King Lagazee on Asaase Yaad Settingz weekend show.
“I think we should be fair to ourselves,” he added. “Almost like a decade ago, you can say that it is only Samini that can boast of doing proper reggae.”
“Even with that, the people who created the original reggae culture used to criticise me on how I present the reggae and how I add Twi,” Samini said.
The Sweet Mistake hitmaker mentioned fellow artist Ras Kuku as one of the best musicians in the reggae fraternity in Ghana.
“But moving forward, we have to give credit to some people like Ras Kuku because when he got the opportunity to step in, he did so fully. I would say that we are trying. It is a very tight space,” Samini added.
