Ishmael Norman: Global diplomacy in tatters after US strike on Iran
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on (23 June), Norman, President of the Institute for Security, Disaster and Emergency Studies, warned that the US cannot bomb Iran and then expect diplomatic cooperation

Security analyst Ishmael Norman has described the recent US military strike on Iran as a devastating blow to global diplomacy and Middle Eastern stability.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on (23 June), Dr Norman, President of the Institute for Security, Disaster and Emergency Studies, warned that the US cannot bomb Iran and then expect diplomatic cooperation.
“You cannot take pre-emptive military action and then ask your adversary to sit at the negotiation table. The trust is gone,” he said.
According to Dr Norman, the military strikes—targeting key sites like Natanz, Isfahan, and Port of Bushehr—will not prevent Iran from advancing its nuclear knowledge.
“Bombs can’t erase nuclear expertise. They may have hit entrances or surface-level infrastructure, but the core capabilities remain.”
He also cautioned that developing countries, especially in Africa, should brace for indirect fallout. “We are vulnerable. If radioactive weapons or dirty bombs are deployed, the lack of protective infrastructure like gas masks, shelters, and bunkers makes countries like Ghana highly exposed,” he said.
Citing past examples like the 1998 US embassy bombing in Nairobi, Dr Norman warned that escalation in the Middle East could trigger proxy attacks globally, including in Africa. “We’re not exempt. We’re part of the global security equation whether we like it or not.”
